Historic Summary of 601 Dolores Street > March 27, 1909 ~ Groundbreaking of Mission Park Congregational Church, aka Norwegian Lutheran Church > The architect & designer was Francis W. Reid of Meiker & Reid > First minister of church was also Canadian-born architect Francis W. Reid > Rev. Reid designed & built notable churches & residences throughout Bay Area > 1930 ~ First listed for sale for $36,000 & purchased by Norwegian Lutheran Church of San Francisco > Improvements with new owner included rebuilding choir loft, alter & painting ceiling > The ceiling was hand-painted with a design copied from a historic Swedish church > Interior wainscoting, extant in the altar, choir loft and pulpit was designed & installed by Mullen Manufacturing Company, a company owned by church member Nils Nordstrand > 1931 ~ Norwegian Lutheran Church was dedicated > April 19, 1942 ~ His & Her Royal Highness, Crown Prince Olaf and Crown Princess Martha of Norway attended mass here during the height of World War II > During mass the Prince & Princess expressed great concern for Norway during World War II > May 13, 1945 ~ A V-E (Victory in Europe) mass was held post World War II > 1959 ~ The church was rededicated as Ascension Lutheran Church > Early 1960’s ~ The ground level indoor pool was replaced with a gymnasium > 1963 ~ A new organ was purchased from wicks Company > Post 1970 ~ The church was renamed The Golden Gate Lutheran Church
